Personal Structures, Venice Biennale, Venice Italy

The seventh edition of the biennial contemporary art exhibition Personal Structures encourages exploration beyond boundaries, fostering a broader perspective, and overcoming restrictions to promote personal, social, and global growth. It features a wide selection of artworks from internationally renowned and emerging artists, photographers, and sculptors as well as worldwide galleries and academic institutions, exhibited in the historical venues of Palazzo Bembo, Palazzo Mora, and Marinaressa Gardens. The group show is intended to encourage dialogue, cultural exchange, and idea-sharing among its participants, exploring the themes of Time, Space, and Existence from a variety of perspectives.

Echoes of Ferguson

On the tenth anniversary of the Ferguson Uprising and the galvanizing death of Mike Brown, the Echoes of Ferguson exhibition will open in Chicago, IL on August 9, 2024. This powerful and emotional retrospective examines the enduring impact of the Ferguson uprising and explores themes of grief, evanescent placemaking, memory, memorials, monuments, and resistance to state violence.

The exhibition, featuring the work of photographers Devin Allen, Jen Everett, Kris Graves, Jon Henry, Alexis Hunley, and Joshua Rashaad McFadden, documents the complexities of Black life. These artists become storytellers, echoing a movement that resists the social injustices reverberating through 21st-century Black and American life.

Solo Exhibition (Early Career Survey), at the George Eastman Museum, 2021-2022

From 2019 to 2022, I dedicated myself to preparing and realizing my first major solo museum exhibition at the renowned George Eastman Museum, titled "Joshua Rashaad McFadden: I Believe I'll Run On." This milestone in my career was achieved through intensive, collaborative efforts across four cities, ensuring meticulous planning and execution. The exhibition critically examines race, masculinity, sexuality, and gender in the U.S., profoundly impacting the art community and society. Extensively documented and reviewed by leading critics, including Art in America, the exhibition reached diverse audiences, including art enthusiasts, students, and scholars, benefiting from its powerful narratives.

Solo Exhibition: Evidence, Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, NY, 2020

From August 29 to November 21, 2020, my exhibition "Evidence" was showcased at the Visual Studies Workshop (VSW) Gallery, a respected institution in the visual arts community. This exhibition expanded on my previous work in "Come to Selfhood," delving deeper into themes of Black masculinity, gender identity, conformity, and resistance. Featuring writings and conversations with notable figures like playwright Jireh Holder and actor/singer Dyllon Burnside, "Evidence" provided rich context and depth. In homage to Frederick Douglass, the exhibition was also a newspaper, distributed across Rochester, ensuring broad community engagement. The project was documented through photographs and writings, with press and reviews enhancing its impact and reach.

Group Exhibition: 2020 Aperture Summer Open: Information Exhibition From September 24 to October 25, 2020,

From September 24 to October 25, 2020, I was featured in the prestigious "2020 Aperture Summer Open: Information" exhibition at Fotografiska New York. Curated by notable figures from Aperture, the Magnum Foundation, and TIME, this exhibition showcased work by fourteen photographers exploring globalization, technology, and politics. My contributions examined race, memory, and digital information's hidden spaces, addressing critical societal themes. Documented through high-quality prints, the exhibition attracted a diverse audience and highlighted my impact in contemporary photography. The inclusion in this peer-reviewed, highly respected exhibition underscores my role in advancing discussions on truth, identity, and power.

Group Exhibition: Woodstock AIR: Housed

From April 27 to June 16, 2019, I was featured in the "Woodstock AIR: Housed" exhibition at the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW). Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Woodstock AIR program, this exhibition showcased the work of photography-based artists of color, including myself, within the context of diversity, race, and social justice. The artist house, providing living and work space, inspired stunning and diverse works. Documented through high-quality prints, the exhibition was supported by notable organizations like the NEA and the Andy Warhol Foundation, highlighting the powerful contributions of underrepresented artists and reinforcing my commitment to social justice through photography.

Group Exhibition: Gathering Clouds - Photographs from the Nineteenth Century and Today, George Eastman Museum, Rochester, New York

I was honored to be part of the "Gathering Clouds" exhibition at the George Eastman Museum. This prestigious exhibition explored the role of clouds in photography from its inception in 1839 to World War I, juxtaposing nineteenth-century works with contemporary pieces. Featuring my work alongside historical figures like Alvin Langdon Coburn and contemporary artists like Carrie Mae Weems, the exhibition highlighted the evolving relationship between clouds and photography. Documented through high-quality prints and a comprehensive catalog, the exhibition was peer-reviewed and attracted a diverse audience, contributing to the discourse on the intersection of nature and culture in photography.

Group Exhibition: Arts Center Gallery, Nazareth College. (2020 October 2-2020 November 13). Continuing the Dia- log: The State of Photography II. Rochester, New York, United States.

From October 2 to November 13, 2020, my work was featured in "Continuing the Dialog: The State of Photography II" at the Arts Center Gallery, Nazareth College. This invitational exhibition showcased 29 photography artists and educators from upstate New York, emphasizing the expansive nature of contemporary photography. The inclusion of my work highlighted its significance and relevance in the field. Despite COVID-19 challenges, the exhibition remained accessible to the Nazareth community, fostering engagement and dialogue. Documented through photographs and comprehensive records, the exhibition underscored the scholarly and creative contributions of the artists, reinforcing my role in advancing critical discussions on contemporary photography.

A comprehensive survey of the photography of rising and influential Black artist Joshua Rashaad McFadden

American artist Joshua Rashaad McFadden (b. 1990) makes photographs that explore and celebrate Black life in the United States. Published in conjunction with his first solo museum exhibition, Joshua Rashaad McFadden: I Believe I’ll Run On demonstrates his mastery of a wide range of photographic genres—social documentary, reportage, portraiture, and fine art—and his use of the medium to confront racism and anti-Black violence. Like Black photographers before him, such as Gordon Parks, Roy DeCarava, Carrie Mae Weems, Dawoud Bey, and LaToya Ruby Frazier, McFadden documents the beauty of Black life and illuminates the specificity of Black living in our historical present, including a series of impactful photographs devoted to the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020.

Along with a candid conversation between McFadden and artist Lyle Ashton Harris and an essay that traces McFadden’s meteoric career, this catalogue offers an overview of and insight into a poignant and deeply personal body of work, asserting McFadden’s key role in shaping the art and visual culture of the United States.

The story highlights my journey from Rochester to Minneapolis and Atlanta to capture these historic events. My photographs aim to show the humanity of those affected by racial injustice, making their struggles relatable to a broader audience. This coverage underscores the emotional depth and significance of my work in contemporary discourse on race and justice. National Geographic's "The Year in Pictures"

In December 2020, my work was featured in National Geographic's special issue, "The Year in Pictures," highlighting 54 photographs that captured the essence of an extraordinary year. Curated by Susan Goldberg, this issue marked the first retrospective of a single year in the publication’s history. My photographs documented pivotal moments of racial strife and the global movement for social justice, reflecting the powerful impact of visual storytelling. Photo Exhibition Explores Intimacies of Black Life

The Rochester Beacon featured my new solo exhibition, "Joshua Rashaad McFadden: I Believe I’ll Run On," at the George Eastman Museum, which opened on November 5, 2021. The exhibit explores race, sexuality, and gender in Black American lives, continuing my career-long focus on these themes. The article highlights my documentation of Black Lives Matter protests and the emotions of the protesters. This retrospective features series like "After Selma" and "Love Without Justice," debuting at the museum. Recognized with multiple awards, my work captures the hardships, resilience, and love within the Black community, offering viewers a deeper understanding of Black life in the U.S.

Vanity Fair featured my work in an article discussing the experiences of photojournalists covering the nationwide protests following George Floyd's death. I shared my firsthand account from Minneapolis, describing the intense atmosphere as smoke from local fires filled the air each evening, creating a war zone-like environment. My documentation captured the tangible despair and deep-seated pain of protesters, especially young people, as they demanded justice. The article underscores the critical role of photojournalists in documenting these historic events, highlighting the power of visual storytelling in the fight against systemic racism and police brutality. The Financial Times featured my work in "Portraits of Protest in America" on June 5, 2020, highlighting the experiences of four African-American photographers documenting the George Floyd protests. The article explored the emotional weight of capturing these historic demonstrations against police brutality and systemic racism. It emphasized how Floyd's death ignited widespread fury and protests, highlighting the disproportionate impact on ethnic minorities. By documenting these moments, we bring attention to the urgent need for change and contribute to the broader discourse on racial inequality. This feature underscores the critical role of Black photographers in visual storytelling and advocating for social justice.

Black Photographers Discuss the Challenges and Necessity of Documenting Protests

I was featured in the Observer on September 30, 2020, in an article by Jordyn Paul-Slater, discussing the challenges and necessity of documenting Black Lives Matter protests. The article explores the emotional connection Black photojournalists have with these events. I shared my experiences of covering protests for major outlets and the difficulty of separating my emotions from the task. Despite this, I strive to convey authenticity and dignity in my work. The feature also addresses the importance of protecting protestor anonymity while capturing the movement's essence. This coverage highlights the crucial role of Black photographers in advocating for social justice through visual storytelling.

Capturing the spirit of Black resistance in the US today

Huck Magazine featured my work on February 3, 2022, in an article by Miss Rosen titled "Capturing the spirit of Black resistance in the US today." The piece highlights my decade-long exploration of racism, masculinity, sexuality, and gender through photography. It discusses my series "After Selma," "Come to Selfhood," and "Unrest in America," reflecting on significant social movements like Black Lives Matter. Inspired by photographers such as Roy DeCarava and Carrie Mae Weems, my work aims to capture the profound emotions of Black Americans. This feature underscores the impact of my visual storytelling in advocating for social justice and documenting the fight for equality.

These Pictures Capture What It Means To Be A Black Man In America Today

BuzzFeed News featured my photo series "Come to Selfhood," which explores Black masculinity in America through striking portraits and personal testimonies. Published on February 28, 2019, the article highlighted how the series responds to the frequent killings of unarmed Black men by police, aiming to break through stereotypes and myths. "Come to Selfhood" fosters empathy and sparks action by encouraging viewers to see their sons, brothers, and fathers in the images. The feature emphasized the human experience of Black men, adding depth with personal narratives and showcasing the impact of my work on contemporary discussions about race, identity, and social justice.
